Beclomethasone is a potent corticosteroid inhaler designed for the management and prevention of chronic respiratory inflammation. As a first-line maintenance therapy, it targets the underlying inflammatory processes in conditions like asthma and COPD, reducing both frequency and severity of symptoms. Its localized action minimizes systemic exposure while delivering effective control, making it a cornerstone in long-term respiratory care protocols. Medical professionals consistently recommend beclomethasone for its established efficacy and favorable safety profile when used as directed.
Features
- Contains beclomethasone dipropionate as active pharmaceutical ingredient
- Available in metered-dose inhaler (MDI) and dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulations
- Delivers precise microgram doses per actuation (typically 40-250 mcg)
- Formulated with HFA propellant (hydrofluoroalkane) in MDI versions
- Features dose counters for accurate administration tracking
- Compatible with spacer devices for improved lung deposition
- Stable at room temperature with protective storage cap
- Prescription-only medication with child-resistant packaging
Benefits
- Significantly reduces airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness
- Decreases frequency and severity of asthma exacerbations
- Improves lung function measurements (FEV1 and peak flow)
- Reduces reliance on rescue bronchodilators
- Enables better disease control and improved quality of life
- Minimizes systemic steroid exposure through localized delivery
Common use
Beclomethasone is primarily indicated for the prophylactic management of persistent asthma in patients aged 5 years and older. It is also prescribed for maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in appropriate patients. Additionally, it may be used off-label for certain allergic conditions and eosinophilic pulmonary disorders under specialist supervision. The medication is not intended for acute bronchospasm relief but rather for long-term inflammatory control.
Dosage and direction
Adult dosage (asthma): Initially 40-160 mcg twice daily, titrated to lowest effective dose. Maximum 320 mcg twice daily.
Pediatric dosage (5-11 years): 40 mcg twice daily, maximum 80 mcg twice daily.
Administration: Shake inhaler well before use. Exhale fully, place mouthpiece between lips, and inhale deeply while activating canister. Hold breath for 10 seconds. Rinse mouth after each use to prevent oral candidiasis.
Special populations: Hepatic impairment may require dose adjustment. Elderly patients should start at lower end of dosing range.
Precautions
- Not for relief of acute bronchospasm; keep rescue inhaler accessible
- Monitor growth velocity in pediatric patients on long-term therapy
- Caution in patients with tuberculosis, fungal, bacterial, or viral infections
- Regular ophthalmologic exams recommended with prolonged use
- May cause systemic corticosteroid effects at high doses
- Assess bone mineral density in patients at risk for osteoporosis
- Monitor for adrenal suppression during stress situations or surgery
- Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to beclomethasone or any formulation components
- Status asthmaticus or other acute asthmatic episodes
- Untreated systemic infections
- Active or quiescent tuberculosis infection of respiratory tract
- Untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral infections
- Severe hepatic impairment (requires careful risk-benefit assessment)
Possible side effect
Common (≥1%): Oral candidiasis, hoarseness, throat irritation, cough, headache
Less common (0.1-1%): Dysphonia, pharyngitis, sinusitis, nausea
Rare (<0.1%): Systemic corticosteroid effects (adrenal suppression, growth suppression), paradoxical bronchospasm, angioedema, anaphylaxis
Oropharyngeal effects: May be minimized with proper inhaler technique and mouth rinsing
Drug interaction
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, ritonavir) may increase systemic exposure
- Concurrent systemic corticosteroids may increase risk of adverse effects
- May diminish response to vaccines; avoid live vaccines during treatment
- Potential interaction with other immunosuppressive agents
- Monitoring required when used with diuretics or cardiac glycosides
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Maintain regular dosing schedule. Consistent daily use is essential for optimal therapeutic effect. If multiple doses are missed, contact healthcare provider for guidance on resuming therapy.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely to produce serious effects due to localized action. However, excessive use may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects including hypercorticism and adrenal suppression. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, and increased thirst. Treatment is supportive with monitoring of adrenal function. Chronic excessive use requires gradual dose reduction under medical supervision to avoid adrenal insufficiency.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C/59-86°F) in upright position. Keep canister away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not puncture or incinerate. Keep in original container with cap securely closed. Discard inhaler when counter reaches zero or 3 months after removal from foil pouch, whichever comes first. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Reviews
“Beclomethasone has been transformative for my severe asthma management. As a pulmonologist, I’ve prescribed it for decades with consistent results. Patients achieve remarkable inflammation control with minimal systemic effects when used correctly. The dose counter and spacer compatibility make it particularly user-friendly.” - Dr. Eleanor Vance, MD, Pulmonology
“After struggling with frequent COPD exacerbations, beclomethasone maintenance therapy reduced my hospitalizations by 70%. The learning curve for proper technique was worth mastering. My quality of life has improved significantly with stable breathing throughout seasonal changes.” - James W., patient for 8 years
“Clinical trials consistently demonstrate beclomethasone’s efficacy in reducing airway inflammation markers. Its safety profile makes it suitable for long-term management, though regular monitoring remains essential. The medication continues to be a foundation in respiratory therapeutic guidelines worldwide.” - Global Respiratory Medicine Journal, 2023 Meta-Analysis
