Diarex is a clinically formulated antidiarrheal medication designed for rapid and effective management of both acute and chronic diarrhea. It combines loperamide hydrochloride—a potent opioid receptor agonist—with simethicone to address not only frequency and urgency but also associated cramping and bloating. Developed under strict pharmaceutical guidelines, Diarex works by slowing intestinal motility and facilitating the consolidation of stool, providing predictable and reliable symptomatic relief. Its targeted mechanism ensures minimal systemic absorption, prioritizing both efficacy and patient safety in gastrointestinal distress management.

Features

  • Contains 2mg loperamide hydrochloride per caplet
  • Includes 125mg simethicone for anti-flatulent action
  • Coated for ease of swallowing
  • Rapid disintegration for quick onset of action
  • Gluten-free, lactose-free, and sugar-free formulation
  • Packaged in a moisture-resistant, child-resistant blister pack

Benefits

  • Reduces bowel movement frequency within one hour of administration
  • Alleviates abdominal cramping and discomfort
  • Minimizes gas and bloating through added simethicone
  • Restores confidence and daily routine by controlling urgency
  • Supports rehydration therapy by decreasing fluid loss
  • Suitable for both acute infectious diarrhea and chronic conditions like IBS-D

Common use

Diarex is commonly used in cases of acute diarrhea caused by viral or bacterial gastroenteritis, food intolerance, or traveler’s diarrhea. It is also indicated for symptom management in chronic functional bowel disorders, such as diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), and for patients undergoing chemotherapy or antibiotic therapy who experience diarrhea as a side effect.

Dosage and direction

For adults and children 12 years and older: Take two caplets initially, followed by one caplet after each loose stool. Do not exceed 8 caplets in 24 hours.
For children 6–11 years: Use only under medical supervision. Dosage is one caplet initially, then one caplet after each loose stool, not exceeding 3 caplets in 24 hours.
Take with water; may be taken with or without food. Do not chew or crush—swallow whole.

Precautions

  • Do not use if diarrhea is accompanied by high fever or blood in stool.
  • Consult a healthcare provider before use if you have liver impairment.
  • Not recommended for prolonged use without medical advice.
  • Discontinue use and seek medical attention if symptoms persist beyond 48 hours.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to loperamide, simethicone, or any ingredient in the formulation.
  • Patients with abdominal pain without diarrhea.
  • Children under 6 years of age.
  • Those with conditions where constipation should be avoided (e.g., megacolon).
  • Patients with bacterial enterocolitis caused by invasive organisms (e.g., Salmonella, Shigella).

Possible side effect

Most side effects are mild and transient. They may include:

  • Constipation
  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal discomfort or distension
  • Dry mouth Rare but serious side effects include allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling) or symptoms of toxic megacolon (severe bloating, abdominal pain). Discontinue use and seek medical help if these occur.

Drug interaction

Loperamide is primarily metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2C8 enzymes. Use with caution when co-administered with:

  • QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., erythromycin, quinidine)
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir)
  • Other central nervous system depressants
  • P-glycoprotein inhibitors Simethicone has no known significant interactions.

Missed dose

Diarex is taken as needed based on bowel movements. There is no fixed dosing schedule; therefore, the concept of a “missed dose” does not apply. Take one caplet after the next loose stool if earlier intake was forgotten.

Overdose

Symptoms may include severe constipation, CNS depression (drowsiness, lethargy), nausea, and urinary retention. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center. Naloxone may be used for reversal under clinical supervision.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Keep in original packaging. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the box.

Disclaimer

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Always read the label and use as directed. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking other medications, or have underlying medical conditions. Do not use for more than 2 days without medical advice.
