Doxt SL: Advanced Dual-Action Therapy for Bacterial Infections
Doxt SL is a prescription-only, broad-spectrum antibiotic formulation designed for the targeted treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections. Combining doxycycline and lactobacillus sporogenes, it offers a dual mechanism of action: potent antibacterial efficacy alongside probiotic support to maintain gastrointestinal health during therapy. This advanced formulation is indicated for respiratory, genitourinary, and skin infections, providing clinicians with a reliable option for patients requiring extended antibiotic courses. Its delayed-release tablets ensure optimal drug absorption and minimize gastric irritation.
Features
- Active ingredients: Doxycycline 100 mg, Lactobacillus sporogenes 60 million spores
- Pharmaceutical form: Delayed-release tablet
- Pack size: 10 tablets per strip
- Mechanism: Bacteriostatic action via protein synthesis inhibition
- Delayed-release technology for reduced gastric side effects
- Stability: Shelf-stable under recommended storage conditions
Benefits
- Effectively eradicates a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Probiotic component helps preserve natural gut flora, reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhea
- Convenient once or twice-daily dosing supports patient adherence
- Delayed-release formulation minimizes esophageal and gastric irritation
- Suitable for patients with penicillin allergies
- Provides coverage for atypical pathogens including Chlamydia and Mycoplasma
Common use
Doxt SL is commonly prescribed for bacterial pneumonia, chronic bronchitis exacerbations, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections. It is also used in the management of sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia and as adjunctive therapy in pelvic inflammatory disease. Off-label uses may include Lyme disease, malaria prophylaxis, and treatment of certain rickettsial infections.
Dosage and direction
The standard adult dosage is one tablet (100 mg doxycycline/60 million spores lactobacillus) twice daily, taken 12 hours apart. For less severe infections, one tablet daily may be sufficient. Tablets must be swallowed whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing upright to prevent esophageal ulceration. Administration should occur either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, though may be taken with food if gastrointestinal upset occurs. Treatment typically continues for 7-14 days depending on infection severity and clinical response.
Precautions
Patients should avoid excessive sun exposure and use sunscreen during treatment due to photosensitivity risk. Do not take with dairy products, antacids, or iron supplements within 2-3 hours of dosing. Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment or those taking hepatotoxic medications. May cause dizziness; caution when operating machinery. Not recommended during tooth development (last half of pregnancy through age 8 years) due to potential for tooth discoloration.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to doxycycline, other tetracyclines, or any component of the formulation. Severe hepatic impairment. Children under 8 years of age. Concomitant use with retinoids. Patients with esophageal disorders that may delay tablet passage.
Possible side effects
Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, photosensitivity, esophageal irritation. Less common: Glossitis, stomatitis, vaginal candidiasis, enterocolitis. Rare: Pseudotumor cerebri, hepatotoxicity, blood dyscrasias, Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Discontinue if severe allergic reactions or persistent diarrhea occurs.
Drug interaction
Significant interactions with: antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium; iron preparations; barbiturates; carbamazepine; warfarin (monitor INR); oral contraceptives (reduced efficacy); penicillin-class antibiotics. Avoid concurrent use with methoxyflurane. May potentiate effects of oral anticoagulants.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Maintain regular dosing schedule to ensure consistent antibiotic levels.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. No specific antidote exists; management is supportive with gastric lavage if recent ingestion. Hemodialysis does not significantly remove doxycycline. Medical attention should be sought immediately for suspected overdose.
Storage
Store below 30Β°C in original packaging, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after expiration date printed on packaging.
