Rogaine 5 (minoxidil topical solution 5%) is an FDA-approved over-the-counter medication for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern hair loss. Its active ingredient, minoxidil, is a vasodilator that works by prolonging the anagen (growth) phase of the hair follicle, increasing blood flow to the scalp, and stimulating dormant follicles. Extensive clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in promoting visible hair regrowth and slowing further hair loss in a significant proportion of users when used consistently as directed. This topical solution is a cornerstone of non-prescription pharmacological treatment for this condition.

Features

  • Contains 5% minoxidil as the active pharmaceutical ingredient.
  • Formulated in a topical solution with alcohol, propylene glycol, and purified water.
  • Supplied with a metered-dose applicator for precise, consistent dosing.
  • Designed for easy once- or twice-daily application directly to the scalp.
  • Available without a prescription (over-the-counter).

Benefits

  • Promotes visible hair regrowth in the crown (vertex) of the scalp.
  • Helps to slow the progression of hereditary hair loss.
  • Increases hair density and coverage over time with continued use.
  • Provides a non-invasive, first-line treatment option.
  • Easy to incorporate into a daily grooming routine.
  • Offers a clinically validated approach to managing pattern baldness.

Common use

Rogaine 5% topical solution is indicated for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) in men. It is most effective for treating hair loss at the crown (vertex) of the scalp. Its use is not indicated for a receding hairline (frontal baldness) or for complete baldness. Treatment is most successful in individuals who have been experiencing hair loss for less than five years and who have a smaller area of hair loss. It is a chronic-use treatment; discontinuation will typically result in the loss of any newly regrown hair within a few months.

Dosage and direction

Apply 1 mL of the solution twice daily directly to the scalp in the hair loss area. The total daily dose should not exceed 2 mL. Using the applicator provided, part the hair to expose the scalp and apply the solution to the affected area. Gently massage into the scalp with your fingers. Do not apply to any other part of the body. Wash your hands thoroughly after application. The hair and scalp should be completely dry before application. Do not use a hairdryer to dry the solution after application, as this can reduce effectiveness. Consistency is critical; the product must be used daily for at least four months before results can be expected.

Precautions

  • For external use on the scalp only. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken or irritated skin.
  • Not for use by women. A separate 2% formulation is available for women.
  • Do not use if you are unaware of the cause of your hair loss or if your hair loss is sudden and/or patchy. Consult a physician or dermatologist for a diagnosis.
  • Monitor for signs of allergic reaction, such as redness, itching, or severe scalp irritation.
  • Minoxidil can be absorbed systemically. Use with caution if you have heart disease, hypertension, or a history of hypotension.
  • This product contains alcohol and propylene glycol, which can be drying and/or irritating to the skin.

Contraindications

Rogaine 5 is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to minoxidil, alcohol, or propylene glycol. Its use is also contraindicated in women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, due to the risk of systemic absorption and potential fetal harm. It should not be used by individuals under 18 years of age. Do not use on a sunburned or otherwise damaged or inflamed scalp.

Possible side effects

The most common side effects are local and dermatological, occurring at the site of application. These include:

  • Scalp itching, flaking, dryness, and/or irritation (contact dermatitis).
  • Increased hair shedding or temporary hair loss during the initial 2-8 weeks of treatment. This is often a sign that the medication is beginning to work, as it sheds older, resting hairs to make way for new growth. Less common but more serious side effects related to systemic absorption can occur and require immediate medical attention. These include:
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia, palpitations)
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or face (edema)
  • Unexplained weight gain

Drug interaction

While topical minoxidil has low systemic absorption, interactions are possible. Use with caution if you are taking any medication for hypertension, as minoxidil can potentiate their effects and lead to hypotension. Concurrent use of topical corticosteroids or other agents that increase skin absorption may increase the systemic levels of minoxidil. Inform your physician that you are using this product before starting any new prescription medication.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Accidental ingestion of this topical solution constitutes a medical emergency due to the risk of severe cardiovascular effects (profound hypotension, tachycardia) and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of topical overdose from excessive application would mirror the systemic side effects, including dizziness, syncope, and edema. In case of accidental ingestion, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage

Store at room temperature (20°-25°C or 68°-77°F). Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed and stored upright. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of any solution that has changed color or appears contaminated.

Reviews

Clinical trials and meta-analyses have consistently shown that 5% topical minoxidil is significantly more effective than placebo and the 2% formulation in promoting hair regrowth in men with androgenetic alopecia. One pivotal 48-week study demonstrated that 5% minoxidil applied twice daily resulted in “a 45% increase in non-vellus hair count” compared to placebo. Patient-reported outcomes often note satisfaction with increased hair coverage and thickness, though many reviews emphasize that patience and strict adherence to the application regimen are paramount. The initial shedding phase is frequently cited as a cause for early discontinuation, though clinicians note it is a positive prognostic indicator. Long-term user reviews often state that maintenance of results is entirely dependent on continued use.
