Asthalin Inhaler: Rapid Relief for Acute Bronchospasm

Asthalin is a fast-acting bronchodilator inhaler containing salbutamol, designed for the immediate relief of bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, allowing improved airflow within minutes of administration. This medication is a cornerstone in both rescue and maintenance therapy for reversible obstructive airway diseases, offering patients quick symptom control and enhanced quality of life. Available by prescription, Asthalin should be used under medical supervision to ensure appropriate and safe application.

Features

  • Contains salbutamol sulfate as the active ingredient, a selective beta2-adrenergic agonist
  • Delivered via metered-dose inhaler (MDI) for precise dosing and portability
  • Rapid onset of action, typically within 5–15 minutes
  • Duration of effect lasts 4–6 hours per dose
  • Available in strengths of 100 mcg per puff
  • Each canister provides 200 actuations

Benefits

  • Provides swift relief from acute shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness
  • Helps restore normal breathing patterns during asthma attacks or COPD exacerbations
  • Enables greater physical activity and reduces limitations imposed by airway obstruction
  • Supports preventive use before exercise to avoid exercise-induced bronchospasm
  • Reduces emergency healthcare visits through effective symptom management
  • Improves overall quality of life by allowing better daily function and sleep

Common use

Asthalin is commonly prescribed for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway diseases. It is indicated for asthma—both allergic and non-allergic—and for COPD, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is also used prophylactically to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm. The inhaler is suitable for adults and children, though dosage must be adjusted based on age and clinical need.

Dosage and direction

For relief of acute bronchospasm:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 1–2 puffs every 4–6 hours as needed.
  • Children 4–12 years: 1 puff every 4–6 hours; maximum 4 puffs per day.

For prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm:

  • 2 puffs 15–30 minutes before exercise.

Shake the inhaler well before each use. Breathe out fully, place the mouthpiece between your lips, and inhale deeply while pressing the canister. Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Wait at least 1 minute between puffs. Rinse your mouth after use to reduce the risk of oral thrush.

Precautions

  • Do not exceed the prescribed dosage; overuse may lead to decreased effectiveness and increased risk of side effects.
  • Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes.
  • Monitor for paradoxical bronchospasm; discontinue use if it occurs.
  • Not intended as a sole therapy for asthma; combine with inhaled corticosteroids for long-term control if prescribed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Contraindications

Asthalin is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Known hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation.
  • Tachyarrhythmias or severe cardiac disease.
  • History of severe hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic amines.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include:

  • Tremor, nervousness, headache
  • Tachycardia, palpitations
  • Throat irritation, cough
  • Muscle cramps

Less common but serious side effects:

  • Chest pain, arrhythmias
  • Significant hypokalemia
  • Paradoxical bronchospasm
  • Allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or anaphylaxis (rare)

Drug interaction

Asthalin may interact with:

  • Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol), which may antagonize its effects
  • Diuretics, which may increase the risk of hypokalemia
  • MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants, potentially enhancing cardiovascular effects
  • Other sympathomimetic agents, increasing the risk of adverse effects
  • Xanthine derivatives (e.g., theophylline), potentially increasing the risk of tachycardia

Missed dose

Asthalin is typically used on an as-needed basis for symptom relief. If using a scheduled regimen and a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

Overdose may manifest as:

  • Tachycardia, angina, hypertension or hypotension
  • Tremors, seizures, nervousness
  • Hypokalemia, hyperglycemia

Treatment is supportive and may include cardioselective beta-blockers (with caution in asthmatic patients), electrolyte monitoring, and symptomatic care. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Avoid freezing, direct sunlight, and excessive heat. Do not puncture or incinerate the canister, even when empty. Keep out of reach of children.
