Common use
Cenmox (amoxicillin) is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections including streptococcal pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, lower respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections. It may also be used as part of combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication and for dental infections. This antibiotic is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
Dosage and direction
The dosage of Cenmox varies based on the infection severity, patient age, weight, and renal function. For adults with mild to moderate infections, the typical dose is 250-500 mg every 8 hours or 500-875 mg every 12 hours. For more severe infections, doses may be increased to 500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours. Pediatric dosing is typically 20-90 mg/kg/day divided every 8-12 hours based on infection type and severity. Always complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve, unless directed otherwise by your healthcare provider. Take with or without food, though administration with food may reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Precautions
Inform your healthcare provider of any penicillin or cephalosporin allergies before taking Cenmox. Use with caution in patients with mononucleosis due to increased risk of rash. May cause fungal or bacterial superinfections, including antibiotic-associated colitis. Use caution in patients with renal impairment; dosage adjustment may be necessary. May cause false-positive glucose urine tests using copper reduction methods. Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
Contraindications
Cenmox is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Do not use in patients with a history of amoxicillin-associated cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction. Contraindicated in patients with infectious mononucleosis due to high incidence of erythematous rash. Not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min) without appropriate dosage adjustment.
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, skin rash, and urticaria. Less frequently, patients may experience headache, taste perversion, glossitis, stomatitis, black “hairy” tongue, mucocutaneous candidiasis, vaginal itching or discharge, and reversible agitation. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis), hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, blood dyscrasias, and anaphylaxis.
Drug interaction
Probenecid decreases renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin, increasing blood concentrations. Allopurinol may increase the incidence of skin rashes. Amoxicillin may decrease the efficacy of oral contraceptives; additional contraceptive methods are recommended. May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants. Concurrent use with bacteriostatic antibiotics may interfere with amoxicillin’s bactericidal effects.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Cenmox, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Maintaining consistent antibiotic levels is important for effectiveness, so try to take your medication at evenly spaced intervals.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may be prominent. Renal impairment may occur. Maintain hydration and electrolyte balance. Amoxicillin can be removed from circulation by hemodialysis. There is no specific antidote for amoxicillin overdose; treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. Contact a poison control center or seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store Cenmox capsules at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F). Keep in the original container, tightly closed, and protected from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom or near sinks. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging. Properly discard any unused medication after completing treatment.
