Its active ingredient, bisacodyl, is a stimulant laxative that works directly on the colon to encourage bowel movement, providing reliable and effective relief from occasional constipation. This product is designed for adults and children over 6 years of age, offering a solution that helps restore comfortable regularity with a predictable onset of action. It is available in various forms, including coated tablets and suppositories, to suit individual needs and preferences.

  • Active Ingredient: Bisacodyl (5 mg per coated tablet; 10 mg per suppository)
  • Drug Class: Stimulant laxative
  • Onset of Action: Tablets: 6 to 12 hours; Suppositories: 15 to 60 minutes
  • Formulations: Enteric-coated oral tablets and rectal suppositories

  • Sugar-Free and Gluten-Free Formulation

Benefits

  • Provides predictable and effective relief from occasional constipation.
  • Offers a choice of administration methods to align with personal comfort and urgency of need.
  • Works locally in the large intestine, with minimal systemic absorption.
  • Helps restore comfortable bowel regularity and alleviate associated discomfort.
  • A trusted, clinically proven option with a long history of safe use.
  • Prevents straining, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with hemorrhoids or post-surgical patients.

Common use

Dulcolax is indicated for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It is also frequently used for bowel cleansing prior to surgical procedures, colonoscopies, or radiological examinations where a clear colon is required, always under medical supervision. It is not intended for long-term daily use but serves as an effective intervention for temporary irregularity.

Dosage and direction

For oral tablets (adults and children 12 years and older):

  • Take 1 to 3 tablets (5 mg to 15 mg) orally as a single daily dose. Swallow whole with a full glass of water; do not crush or chew.
  • Best taken at bedtime for predictable results the following morning (6-12 hours later).
  • Do not take within 1 hour of taking antacids or drinking milk.

For oral tablets (children 6 to under 12 years):

  • Take 1 tablet (5 mg) orally as a single daily dose. Usage should be under the guidance of a doctor.

For suppositories (adults and children 12 years and older):

  • Use 1 suppository (10 mg) rectally as a single daily dose.
  • Onset of action is typically between 15 to 60 minutes.

For suppositories (children 6 to under 12 years):

  • Use 1 suppository (10 mg) rectally as a single daily dose under the guidance of a doctor.

Do not use for more than 7 days unless directed by a physician.

Precautions

  • Before use, consult a doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of kidney disease.
  • Do not use if you have nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or a sudden change in bowel habits that persists for more than 2 weeks.
  • Prolonged or excessive use may lead to dependency on laxatives for bowel movements and loss of normal bowel function.
  • Taking this product may worsen conditions like appendicitis or inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis).
  • Ensure adequate fluid intake while using this medication to prevent dehydration.
  • Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after use may indicate a more serious condition; discontinue use and consult a physician.

Contraindications

Dulcolax is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Known hypersensitivity to bisacodyl or any component of the formulation.
  • Acute surgical abdomen, nausea, vomiting, or other signs of appendicitis or acute abdomen.
  • Severe abdominal pain accompanied by fever.
  • Acute inflammatory bowel diseases, such as severe ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.
  • Intestinal obstruction or ileus.
  • Severe dehydration.

Possible side effect

While generally well-tolerated when used occasionally, some individuals may experience:

  • Common: Abdominal discomfort, cramping, and mild nausea.
  • Less Common: Diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, and rectal burning (with suppositories).
  • Rare: Allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, hives), electrolyte imbalance (especially with prolonged use), and fainting. Electrolyte loss may lead to muscle cramps or weakness.

Drug interaction

  • Antacids and Proton Pump Inhibitors (e.g., omeprazole): Concomitant use may cause the enteric coating of tablets to dissolve prematurely in the stomach, leading to stomach irritation or cramping. Separate administration by at least 1 hour.
  • Diuretics or Corticosteroids: Concurrent use may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium levels).
  • Other Laxatives: Using multiple laxatives simultaneously may increase the risk of adverse effects like severe diarrhea and dehydration.
  • Digoxin: Electrolyte imbalance (particularly hypokalemia) can potentiate the toxic effects of digoxin.
  • Antiarrhythmic Drugs: Electrolyte disturbances may affect cardiac rhythm.

Missed dose

Dulcolax is used on an as-needed basis for occasional constipation. It is not intended for scheduled daily dosing, so the concept of a “missed dose” does not apply. Do not take extra medication to make up for a missed dose.

Overdose

  • Symptoms: Overdose may lead to severe cramping, abdominal pain, profuse diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance (manifesting as muscle weakness, dizziness, and fainting).
  • Treatment: Discontinue use immediately. Treatment is primarily supportive and includes replenishing fluids and electrolytes. In cases of severe dehydration or electrolyte disturbance, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control center.

Storage

  • Store at room temperature (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F).
  • Keep the product in its original container, tightly closed, and protect from moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not use suppositories if they are melted or softened; they may be reshaped by cooling in a refrigerator while still in the foil wrapper.
