Common use
Flixotide Nasal Spray is commonly prescribed for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is also used off-label in certain cases of non-allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps, under specialist guidance. Patients typically use it once symptoms emerge or as a preventive measure during high-pollen seasons.
Dosage and direction
For adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older: The recommended dose is 2 sprays into each nostril once daily. Alternatively, 1 spray into each nostril twice daily may be used. Shake well before use. Prime the pump before first use or if not used for 7 days or more by releasing 5 test sprays into the air away from the face. Blow nose gently before administration. Tilt head slightly forward and insert nozzle into nostril, pointing away from the nasal septum. Breathe in gently through the nose while spraying.
Precautions
Do not use in the presence of untreated local nasal infections. Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles if using immunosuppressive doses. Use with caution in patients with tuberculosis, ocular herpes simplex, or untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral systemic infections. Regular monitoring of nasal mucosa is advised to check for signs of irritation or bleeding. Not recommended for children under 12 years unless specifically advised by a physician.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fluticasone propionate or any excipients in the formulation. Contraindicated in patients with active or quiescent tuberculosis infections of the respiratory tract. Should not be used during an acute asthma attack or other acute respiratory episodes. Avoid in patients with recent nasal surgery or nasal trauma until fully healed.
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include nasal irritation, dryness, sneezing, or mild epistaxis (nosebleeds). Uncommon effects include headache, unpleasant taste, and pharyngitis. Rarely, nasal septal perforation, glaucoma, or cataracts may occur with prolonged use. Systemic effects are uncommon but may include adrenal suppression with very high doses.
Drug interaction
Concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir) may increase fluticasone plasma concentrations. Use with caution alongside other corticosteroids, due to potential additive systemic effects. No clinically significant interactions observed with commonly used antihistamines or decongestants.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, use it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely due to low systemic bioavailability. If excessive doses are used, systemic corticosteroid effects such as hypercorticism may occur. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. There is no specific antidote.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Protect from light and freezing. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Discard 3 months after first opening, even if doses remain. Keep out of reach of children.
