Common use

Dosage and direction

Tablets: The recommended initial dose is 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg taken with fluids as a single dose. If headache returns, a second dose may be taken after 2 hours, not to exceed 200mg in 24 hours.

Injection: A single 6mg subcutaneous injection is recommended, which may be repeated after 1 hour if needed (maximum 12mg/24 hours).

Nasal Spray: A single 5mg, 10mg, or 20mg dose sprayed into one nostril, which may be repeated after 2 hours if needed (maximum 40mg/24 hours).

Precautions

Missed dose

Imitrex is taken on an as-needed basis for acute migraine attacks and does not follow a regular dosing schedule. There is no need to make up a missed dose. The medication should only be taken when experiencing a migraine attack, following the prescribed dosing instructions for that episode.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include hypertension, syncope, reflex bradycardia, seizures, and cardiovascular events. In cases of suspected overdose, provide supportive care including continuous ECG monitoring for at least 20 hours and symptomatic treatment.
