Prilosec: Advanced Relief for Frequent Heartburn
Prilosec (omeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) designed to provide long-lasting relief from frequent heartburn by reducing stomach acid production at its source. Clinically proven and trusted by healthcare professionals, it offers a targeted approach to managing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and related acid-related conditions. This medication works by deactivating proton pumps in the stomach lining, ensuring sustained symptom control and improved quality of life for patients.
Features
- Contains omeprazole 20 mg as the active ingredient
- Delayed-release tablet formulation for targeted intestinal absorption
- Acid-resistant enteric coating to protect against gastric degradation
- Once-daily dosing regimen for consistent acid suppression
- Available over-the-counter and by prescription strength
- Suitable for adults 18 years and older
Benefits
- Provides 24-hour heartburn relief with a single daily dose
- Reduces frequency and severity of acid reflux episodes
- Allows healing of erosive esophagitis when used as directed
- Enables consumption of trigger foods with reduced discomfort
- Improves sleep quality by minimizing nighttime acid reflux
- Supports long-term management of chronic acid-related symptoms
Common use
Prilosec is commonly used for the treatment of frequent heartburn (occurring two or more days per week), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production. It is also prescribed for maintenance healing of erosive esophagitis and in combination with antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori eradication. The medication may be used for the short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers and pathological hypersecretory conditions.
Dosage and direction
For frequent heartburn: Take one 20 mg tablet once daily with a glass of water before eating in the morning. Swallow whole; do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. Treatment may continue for 14 days, and courses may be repeated every four months if needed. For prescription-strength indications, follow your healthcare provider’s specific dosage instructions. Do not take more than one tablet per day unless directed by a physician. Allow at least 24 hours between doses.
Precautions
Do not use if you have trouble or pain swallowing food, vomiting with blood, or bloody or black stools. These may be signs of a serious condition requiring different treatment. Consult a doctor before use if you have heartburn for over three months, frequent chest pain, unexplained weight loss, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, or if you are taking prescription medications. Long-term use (beyond three years) may be associated with increased risk of bone fractures, particularly in older adults. Periodic monitoring of magnesium levels may be necessary during prolonged therapy.
Contraindications
Prilosec is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any component of the formulation. Should not be used by those taking rilpivirine-containing products due to potential reduced antiviral efficacy. Not recommended for individuals with suspected gastric malignancy, as symptom relief may delay diagnosis. Contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment without medical supervision. Not for use in children under 18 years of age unless specifically prescribed by a physician.
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include headache (7%), abdominal pain (5%), nausea (4%), diarrhea (4%), vomiting (3%), and flatulence (3%). Less frequently reported effects include dizziness, rash, cough, and back pain. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include severe diarrhea with watery stools, stomach cramps, and fever; kidney problems (urine changes, swelling); low magnesium levels (dizziness, muscle spasms); and lupus erythematosus (joint pain, rash on cheeks or arms that worsens in sun). Long-term use may be associated with vitamin B12 deficiency, fundic gland polyps, and increased risk of fractures.
Drug interaction
Prilosec may interact with clopidogrel, reducing its antiplatelet effect. May increase concentrations of diazepam, warfarin, phenytoin, and digoxin. Concurrent use with methotrexate may increase methotrexate levels. May reduce absorption of ketoconazole, iron salts, erlotinib, and mycophenolate mofetil. St. John’s wort and rifampin may decrease omeprazole concentrations. May interact with HIV medications including atazanavir and nelfinavir. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you frequently forget doses, consider setting a daily reminder to maintain consistent medication levels.
Overdose
In case of suspected overdose, contact poison control (1-800-222-1222) or emergency services immediately. Symptoms may include confusion, drowsiness, blurred vision, tachycardia, nausea, sweating, flushing, headache, and dry mouth. Management is supportive and symptomatic, as omeprazole is not effectively removed by dialysis. Provide healthcare professionals with information about the amount ingested and time of consumption.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 20-25Β°C (68-77Β°F). Keep in the original container with the lid tightly closed to protect from moisture. Do not transfer to other containers. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging. Protect from excessive heat and light. Do not store in bathrooms or other damp areas.
